Sustainable Foam

Control Solution

IWK and POSCO E&C have collaborated to develop an Expandable Flexible Membrane Prefabricated Modular Structure designed to effectively remove viscous foam generated in discharge channels of seawater-based plants such as power plants, LNG terminals, and seawater desalination facilities.

 

This technology is based on OSC (Off-Site Construction) principles, allowing steel structures to be added or variably installed in modular units according to the seawater flow requirements of the facility. This enables rapid installation of lightweight modular structures within a short period, while maximizing the adhesion effect of the flexible membrane to the water surface in response to upstream water level changes, effectively blocking air inflow.

 

Additionally, buoyancy devices installed at the end of the flexible membrane suppress excessive turbulence caused by falling water, ensuring stable removal of viscous foam.

In particular, this technology prevents marine ecosystem pollution caused by viscous foam and minimizes the environmental impact of discharged cooling water. The modular design reduces on-site waste generation, minimizes resource waste, and maximizes energy efficiency. Beyond reducing maintenance costs and enhancing operational efficiency, this technology supports the sustainable operation of plants.

 

Currently under patent application, IWK and POSCO E&C aim to set a new global standard for environmentally friendly and sustainable plant technology through this innovation.
